NCIL is calling on thoughtful, impassioned leaders to play an active role in furthering disability advocacy efforts in this country by applying to become our newest Policy Intern!
As NCIL’s current intern, I know firsthand what a fulfilling and immersive experience this has been for me as I have learned a great deal being exposed to the inner workings of our government and the momentum of the Independent Living Movement as whole. Being NCIL’s Policy Intern has empowered me to make valuable connections with the leaders of the disability rights movement, has given me a platform to engage directly with policy makers at the Capitol, and has solidified my passion for disability issues by exposing me to the complexities of policy firsthand.
During my time here I have engaged with numerous disability advocacy organizations, the State Department, and the Department of Transportation. I have created dialogue with Senate officials about the Reauthorization of the Rehabilitation Act (S. 1356), and have attended hearings and policy briefings while helping to launch a youth campaign to support the Ratification of the CRPD. From developing weekly advocacy updates to working closely with NCIL’s Executive Director, I could not have asked for a better internship experience founded in tangible work and experiential learning.
Policy interns will work at the heart of NCIL, in Washington DC for 10-15 hours each week, for a period of 12 weeks. We encourage applicants of all disciplines who are passionate about disability advocacy and Independent Living issues.
NCIL can provide opportunities for academic credit for the internship and can ensure that NCIL interns will be ideal candidates for open positions at NCIL, CILs, and other advocacy organizations across the country at the completion of this experience.
