Recruiting, orienting, and retaining active and informed SILC members are not easy tasks, but there are proven strategies that can strengthen your approaches to these activities. If you would like to explore some of these strategies, then join us in May to hear from two SILCs that have developed effective processes which result in committed and engaged Council members.

SILC Chairs, Executive Directors, and staff; and any SILC Committee members responsible for recruiting, orienting/training, and supporting SILC members

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will have knowledge and resources that will enable them to:
- Describe effective strategies to strengthen SILC member recruitment processes that will result in committed, highly engaged council members, while reducing turnover.
- Identify the elements of highly effective member orientation sessions that result in greater knowledge of the IL field and a higher comfort level among members as they begin their new roles.
- Utilize effective “best practice” tools and techniques for improving the ongoing support and development of SILC members.
Meet Your Presenters
Liz Pazdral, Executive Director of the California State Independent Living Council, has experienced the Independent Living (IL) movement from a variety of perspectives. Liz has been a consumer of services and has worked at IL Centers in California and Canada for 13 years, including serving in the capacity of executive director. Additionally, she worked in the IL Unit of the California Department of Rehabilitation. Liz has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Occidental College and has completed graduate work in public administration. She lives near Sacramento with her husband and daughter.
Brad Williams has been the Executive Director of the New York State Independent Living Council, Inc. (NYSILC) for the past eighteen years. Previously, he was Executive Director of a CIL for almost ten years in the Southern Adirondacks. Brad helped with others to shape the direction of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network (SSAN) and directed the network during its formative years. As it transitioned to the state association, he continued to push hard on the voting access issue, engaging in a wide variety of efforts to move the NYSBOE toward increased compliance with HAVA and polling place and voting machine access for New Yorkers with disabilities.
Brad has provided support to the council to issue several reports and surveys on a wide variety of topics. He has developed SILC best practices for member recruitment and orientation along with SPIL formulation and public input strategies, presenting on them at conferences. During the past SPIL cycle, he worked with consultant Alan Krieger to develop a SPIL monitoring and evaluation process that engages the SILC.
